Frequently Asked Questions

Are you  “All Natural”?

The term “natural” can be construed to mean a lot of things.  We are not going to lie to you.  Whether or not our products are natural depends on your definition of naturalSome people just want plant-based (vegetarian). Yes, we are plant based.  But the plant oils need to be refined or stabilized so that they don’t contain bug bits or turn brown or go rancid.  We use a lot of food grade ingredients to ensure the highest quality and cleanliness.  Most people are searching for synthetic or chemical free when looking at natural products.  Some products are synthetic free.  Nearly all product needs to have a synthetic preservative in them to prevent rancidity and curb microbial growth.  Our products are made with nutritious plant oils, and unless you don’t mind refrigerating your lotion, it needs a preservative so it doesn’t go moldy.

We carry some raw  products, such as sea salts and sugar scrubs, but our goal is to have unique products, not necessarily synthetic-free ones.  Synthetic is not a bad word.  It is not always possible to make products completely all natural, since “all natural” has limitations.  Also, for sanitary purposes, we do use refined ingredients. No matter how natural we all wish to be, no one want to see bug bits floating in their body butter. Blech!!

Yes, our products are handmade with methods similar to cooking at home, but if you left your milk out on the counter all day it would spoil!  Therefore we need to use some synthetics and preservatives to make our products practical.

Our goal is to make and carry products that are handmade in Manitoba, Canada, while still using as gentle of ingredients as possible.  Some colours and scents may be synthetic in order achieve product stability and consistency.  You wouldn’t buy lotion if it lost it’s scent and went rancid in a week.  There are many synthetic ingredients that provide benefits that natural ingredients can not,  such as an acceptable shelf life, stable emulsions and generous bubbles. If you want a bath full of bubbles, only a bubbling agent will do that! If you want something natural, be prepared to accept limitations.

That being said, we are commited to offering high quality products that have not been “watered down” or “bulked up” with unnecessary fillers or chemicals.  All ingredients used play an active role in our recipes.  We are also commited to choosing mild and healthy ingredients that are gentle and nourishing to your skin.

Be aware of claims made by companies that say their products are 100% all-natural or organic.  When in doubt, research the ingredients so that you understand what goes into your product and whether you agree with it or not.  At Sugar Body & Bath, we disclose all ingredients in INCI format so you know what you’re getting.

What do you mean by sold by weight?

That’s what we said.  Your product is measured on a digital legal-for-trade scale and sold on a price per gram basis, just like buying coffee beans at the local perk house or pastrami at the deli!  Products sold by weight include soap, sea salts, milk bath and mud bar ingredients.

Can I order on the web or by phone?

We do not take retail fax/phone orders, but you can order our products online on our etsy site. Click here, or visit us at www.sugarbodybath.etsy.com.

Do you have a catalogue?

Yup, you’re lookin’ at it!  Our website is our catalogue.  We like to reduce, re-use and recycle where we can at Sugar, and we’d like to not waste paper if we don’t have to– so we don’t have print catalogues! However we have a downloadable PDF version available thru our Home Parties.

Do you have any more locations in Canada?

Not yet, just in Winnipeg.  But in our quest for world domination, you may find us in every household, hiding in showers and bathtubs everywhere!  No bathroom safe!

Where do your products come from?  Do you make them yourself?

We manufacture most of the product ourselves in our workshop/soap studio  in Ste. Anne, Manitoba.  While most of the product carried is made by us, some product is made by other  local artisians and friends, (such as the EMK handbags), and some comes from friends  and artists  in other places (such as our hand knitted bath pouffs from  Vanessa at YarnWyrks). We pride ourselves in the handmade way of doing things, we try to carry as many handmade things as we can.  Many unique items have special tags on them letting you know the story behind the artist.

Are you a franchise?  Do you want a business partner?  Do you wholesale?

No we are not looking for business partners or distributors.  Wholesale product is available from our parent company. Click here to contact our wholesale division.
